Clock Divider and Multiplier Modules?

Post by bharris22 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 1:58 pm

Running Midi Lab standalone, I would like to use its master clock tempo and either divide or multiply that tempo to one or more sequencer VSTs within Midi Lab. Does anyone know the easiest way to do this? I assume there is a Midi Clock Divider widget and/or a Midi Clock Multiplier widget, but I couldn't find it .

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum Brett!

For basic subdivisions you can achieve this by simply using the "MIDI Clock" in the host/master clock mode (it's the default mode). And you place multiple MIDI Clock blocks (single one for each subdivision). There are no multiplications on the list at the moment (once per bar is the largest one denoted by "1"), but it's definitely something we could add if needed. This way all these clocks are synced to the main ("master") clock that you can control on the top bar in the MIDI Lab standalone app.

If you want something crazy, you may need to use the MIDI Script or LUA Script blocks (feeding them with single MIDI Clock output synced to the master clock). Let me know if that's the case then I could give you some sample script for that.

Thanks, Peter! Multiplications would be useful, too, I think (at least to me). Could we also have, for example, 1.125/1, 1.25/1, 1.375/1, 1.5/1, 1.625/1,1.75/1, 1.875/1, 2/1, 2.125/1, etc.?

Hi Peter,

This is very useful - thank you.

Personally, I do think it would be useful to include multiplications of the main tempo, as well. In addition to 2/1, 3/1, 4/1, etc., would it also be possible to include fractions of the main tempo, too? For example, 1.25/1, 1.5/1, etc. This would allow the easy creation of polyrhythms.

Thanks!

Hey,

Yeah, I think it should be there, I'm just not sure of the actual form. We don't want a hundreds items long drop down list (do we?:)) to include combinations like 1.375/1, 3/2.125, 1/1.333 etc. (and still I can imagine someone who couldn't find required value on the list). I think the best option will be to add a "Custom" tempo multiplier field where you could enter numerator and denominator. What do you think?

Ok, I have custom into both Clock and MIDI Clock blocks. There are also 2 other new modules that might be handy when working with clocks especially: Click (generataing audio click sound at each incoming event trigger), and Event Monitor/Debugger (displaying timestamp (with millisecond accuracy), processing block number and sample position within that block and up to 8 event values. Both block are obviously sample accurate. I will try to release some v1.5.1 beta in a few days maybe (standalone only Mac/Win).
